‘Poor’ Quote by Romney Seized on by His Critics
A truncated “I’m not concerned about the very poor” comment was seized on as showing Mitt Romney to be out of touch.
My question is: Where’s the rest of that quote? Don’t stop there. What was that he said in the next sentence? The very poor have safety nets already in place and if those nets need repairs, I will fix it. (Paraphrased from memory). What is wrong with this picture? If you don’t know, I’ll try to enlighten you.
An entire ‘set’ of problems, which allow attacks in the media such as this one, is:
1.) Politicians are not perfect. Like the rest of us, they do not always have time to think carefully before speaking.
2.) Those with the ability to report only half-truths or things out of context, do so in order to promote their own agendas.
3.) The general public, which does not have the time or the inclination to learn/seek/research the truth of the matter, tend to simply repeat what they hear.
4.) Those in power depend on those, who report, and those, who repeat, to stay in power and further their own agendas.
This set of circumstances, unfortunately, rules the political scene in America these days as it has done since the inception of this country. Those in the know depend on those in the dark to remain clueless and it is far easier for those in the dark to remain in the dark and allow those with flashlights to tell them ‘all is well, just close your eyes and go back to sleep’, than to get up and turn on the light and see the monsters surrounding them.
It all reminds me of those commercials for air fresheners where the people are blind-folded, placed in horrendous places and then made to believe that everything smells fresh and clean. Someday, the American People will have to remove the blindfolds and what they see just may shake them to their foundations.
Personally, I prefer to flip on the light and see what is about to eat me. At least, I will have a fighting chance at survival, instead of dying in the middle of a ‘sweet dream’.
Let the light shine from your own eyes and then you will see the truth and the truth will, indeed, set you free!
